The Kingdom Hearts Retrospective

An unprecedented collaboration. A first-time game director. And completely uncharted territory for one of the world's biggest entertainment conglomerates. This is a close look at 2002's Kingdom Hearts, including the game's conception, development, corporate red tape, director Tetsuya Nomura's meetings with the Walt Disney Company, and the creative decisions made for this landmark title. As we await David Tennant's return to Doctor Who for the show's sixtieth anniversary, I decided to go back and reassess his regeneration story and the final episode produced by Russell T. Davies during his first tenure as showrunner. Specifically, we will be discussing the themes of death and change and how "The End of Time" fits into Doctor Who's overall legacy on that front. The Original Broly Movie Was Good, Actually

Dragon Ball Super: Broly ushered unto us a beloved reimagining of one of the most divisive characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. But I feel much of the derision aimed towards the original incarnation of Broly is a bit misplaced due to the character's dumbing down in all of his appearances after the original 1993 film. So let's examine that original film and why, out of the original thirteen ...

Following the success of Final Fantasy IV and its strong focus on character, Hironobu Sakaguchi and his team sought to pivot towards creating a more mechanically rich experience with Final Fantasy V. With Final Fantasy III selling over one million units in 1990, Hironobu Sakaguchi and his team were preparing to send off the Famicom while also embracing the new 16-bit Super Famicom. But with so many of the original team moving on to different projects, Final Fantasy IV would prove to be a new beginning for the series as well as a celebration of what it has built so far. In this installment, ...
Tony Hawk's Underground is Special

Through the 2000s, the Tony Hawk video game series was a sales juggernaut for Activision, being a fun arcade experience that anyone could pick up and play with ease and a gateway into the world of skateboarding and skate culture for a generation. While many would consider one of the Pro Skater titles to be the peak of the series, I always saw the first Underground title as the zenith of what th...
The Final Fantasy III Retrospective

With the Super Famicom looming ahead, Final Fantasy III would be the last game in the series to be developed for Nintendo's 8-bit Family Computer. And while it would take cues from both of its predecessors, it would also embody the grief and hope of series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi during a tumultuous time in his young life. In this part of the Final Fantasy Retrospective, we'll be examining t...

The themes of identity of this game is what originally tied me to this franchise. I played FFVII for the first time when I was 19, on a period where I've never felt so lost. I dropped out of college and didn't know what I wanted to to with my life, who I wanted to be with or who I was. The only thing I knew about this game was the Aerith scene, and nothing else. Cloud's journey deeply affected me and it still does. This game is really important, everything it tries to do, and everything it stands for.

Welcome to the TRIPPLE-XXXL version of a game review, with all the juicy details and history! How to make FFVI harder: Make all characters unique with which skills and magic you develop with them through the game. Also, the way you pronounce Cyan's name, which is spelt in Japanese as Kaien and pronounced as Kye-anne. Who else, like me, pronounced his name as the color cyan?

I think the rebirth really muddied "that scene" up so hard. "Depiciting death that carried actual weight" yet gave us long drawn out speeches, an extra fight with her then a "is she - isnt she?" Until the final CGI. We didnt get the sudden and the impact. We didnt get to send her off outside the temple - the party is just chilling in a flowery field xD Also, my condolences xxx

At the time of its release I had never played a final fantasy game and was just old enough that when my mom showed me the game at the store I saw Donald and Goofy on the cover and immediately dismissed it as a kids game and didn't want to get it. Fortunately she went ahead and bought it for me anyways for my birthday or Christmas so I felt obligated to play it and instantly fell in love with it. It remains one of my favorite gaming series of all time and I periodically play the whole series all over again

I still can’t believe it’s been 22 years of loving a game and characters so much that it’s shaped my entire way of life. I really love how you made all the close ups of the old sketches in your detailed video. I truly wish Nomura went through with the animated series of Kingdom Hearts. I’m making small animations of Sora and it’s been a lot of fun just roughing out goofy looking animations of him. His hair is so much fun to animate. ❤

Aerith’s death saddens me more and more as I grow older. It had already caught me off guard back when I was a 7 year old playing it right after it came out, but now I’m in my 30s and it nearly brought me to tears.

  • @Ternalin

This is why I despise the remake, its so clear that modern Square wants Aerith to come back but that's the whole point of the story. She's dead, she's gone and nothing the player does can bring her back. Stop messing with perfection Square, this is the whole point of the story and why this story is a masterpiece. Similar to FF9 which came after, people WILL die but its how they lived that is more important. I cried when I learnt that Vivi died at the end of 9 as it didn't seem fair but as he says "My memories will be part of the sky...". Reviving Aerith completely GUTS the story. Why Square wants to RUIN this, I have no idea.

I understand the people who like "Simp Chief", but the Chief who was fundamentally a soldier caught up in the socio-politcal dynamics of a series of space wars was more compelling to me because we all get swept up (willing or not) in the times. The way that the Chief and Arbiter become allies for example speaks to how the times can make enemies or allies out of people who might have been otherwise if these bigger forces weren't at play: the tragedy of an individual caught up in the machinations of those in power.

After learning about FFV's endgame bosses at 1:32:14, as a FFXIV player I couldn't help but draw many comparisons to that game's Ultimate raids. Much like FFV's endgame bosses, Omega and Shinryu, FFXIV's Ultimate Raids require careful planning and strategy to overcome them. The level of your character is even capped at a certain threshold to avoid the possibility of overleveling the bosses. And, much like these bosses in FFV, the main draw to beat these Ultimates are for the satisfaction of beating them. They are completely optional. You do get a shiny weapon and a title to show off to other players, but ultimately it is simply a flex. To further drive home the similarities, the most recent Ultimate raid to be added to FFXIV was 'The Omega Protocol', a raid centered around Omega, the same boss from FFV.

The reason why the dream drop distance models were used was because the original KH raw files were lost to a fire. There is a legend that destati is a cursed song and that they were playing it on that day that the fire happened.
